BYLAND RELEASES SOULFUL REIMAGINING OF JACKSON BROWNE’S “THESE DAYS”

A raw and rocking tribute born on the road

Seattle-based indie artist Alie Byland—known mononymously as Byland—has released a powerful new cover of Jackson Browne’s timeless track, “These Days.” The song, reimagined with a driving rock edge and emotional depth, became a surprise staple during the band’s recent six-week tour opening for Deep Sea Diver.

The inspiration came from one of Alie’s day jobs—playing music in retirement communities. It was there, while digging through classic playlists, that she found herself struck by the authenticity of Browne’s lyrics and melody.

“It feels like it was written by someone who truly reflected on how they impacted the world and the people around them,” Alie says. “Right away, I felt inspired to reimagine it—something very different from the original.”

Covers are notoriously difficult to reinterpret, but once Alie brought the idea to drummer and producer Nathan Yaccino, the band found a creative spark. They stripped the song to three poignant verses, picked up her vintage ‘62 Guild guitar, and crafted a version that both honors and transforms the original. The track quickly became a fan favorite on tour.

Recording took place in motion—fitting for a song born on the road. Initial production began mid-tour at Nathan’s Seattle studio, The Ballard Baitshop, with vocals and lead guitar later captured at Penn Studios in NYC and Azmyth Studios in Indianapolis. The track features thoughful instrumentation by Nathan Yaccino, standout lead guitar by Skyler Mehal, whose melodies give the song a haunting, anthemic quality. Alie’s vocals, honed over weeks of live performance, cut through with a raw, lived-in clarity.

“The song became part of the tour for us,” Alie reflects. “Something we wanted—and also discovered—along the way. These days.”

“These Days” releases on all streaming platforms on
